The Caledonian Canal Cruise

Caledonian canal example route

Canals offer an amazing experience, and definitely a slower pace, through some amazing countryside. Yes, that is true of the “Caley” canal, but it is also one of the most diverse. The sea to sea route takes us past railways, through narrow, winding countryside, before opening up into Loch Ness. Of course, while monster watch for Nessie is not discouraged, we like to enjoy this stretch more for the opportunity to “sail in a canal”.

With famous lock gates like Neptune’s staircase and enjoyable canal side facilities, it won’t just be the views that you will remember as you transit this 60 mile masterpiece taking in Scotland’s great Glen (and we aren’t talking about the principal skipper here!).

With Inverness Marina a short distance away from the North end of the canal while a half day transit will see you travel between the southern end at Fort William and the bustling west coast town of Oban. Guided by our crew, cruising the canal you will soon become a dab hand at passing through locks. With options to step off the yacht for a canalside walk or enjoy some unique hospitality along the way, this is one of our favourite “inshore” trips.

luch stop!

Key Information

Travel;

Inverness

Inverness is well served with flights, trains and buses (although these may require a few transfers) with the marina a short hop by taxi from the airport or train station.

Oban

Oban is also well served by bus and train connections, however we recommend taking the train from or to Glasgow. As one of the most amazing train journeys in the UK, we definitely recommend booking a window seat for this one and get in there fast as they go quick in the summer!
